One Woman's Cottage Life--Another Blog!

Non-Toxic Cleaner for Your Cottage

Dear Cottage Friends,

I have received several e-mails and calls asking me what I use to clean my own home since I have allergies and MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities). I have years worth of research on this topic in my file cabinets and if you or your family have allergies, you will want to test each and every product to your own sensitivity. However, that being said, I can tell you that I do not ever personally use any commercial cleaning products found in the grocery store.

I also recommend Debra Lynn Dadd's book, Home Safe Home, because as a recovered MCS sufferer herself, she has been practicing, studying, and living in a non-toxic way for 20 plus years and her book is the "bible" on non-toxic living at home. She is also a frequent writer for the magazine Natural Home.

I personally use the unscented line of AFM cleaner SuperClean to clean everything in my home from my sink, toilet, floor, cabinets....it's the only cleaner I use. AFM products are especially formulated for people with MCS. Anyone can become allergic/develop MCS at any time depending on their immune system health or lack of it and amount of exposure to chemicals already in their environment.

How much talent can one family have?! I've been posting about the Uptown Country Home gals, mother and daughter team Jenny Grumbles and her mom Fran. In addition to her vision of having a boutique where uptown meets country, and condo meets cottage, Jenny also paints in her "spare time." I love her style which I have fondly dubbed, "Chunky Impressionism." She just captures the spirit of place and people in a way that touches my heart. Her use of bold bright color also inspires me. Her paintings make me want to jump right in and sit right down in a comfy chair or go play with those kids at the beach she captures so sweetly. The Uptown Country Home Boutique Gals

Just had to tell you about the Uptown Country Home gals and their wonderful boutique in the beautiful seaside village of LaJolla, CA. Daughter Jenny Grumbles and her mom Fran have created the sweetest little "petit cottage boutique" or as they describe it..."Where pink meets brown. Where trendy meets vintage. Where cottage meets condo. Where comfy meets classy." How could you not love a place like that!? I met Jenny a year or so ago and fell in love with her shop and website immediately. She carries everything from Cath Kidston fabrics to Pine Cone Hill as well as mom Fran's own one of a kind shabby chic accessories, "Frantiques," which are the most distinctive shabby chic items I've come across. Leaping Lizards at My Cottage!

Dear Cottage Friends,

Oh Lordy and Leaping Cottage Lizards! Today I walked into my dining room and there on the inside of my patio door screen was a lizard just sitting on the screen looking towards the floor! Now anyone who knows me well knows that rodents or creatures of any kind other than cats are not welcome in my cottage! So while I was trying to whisk it back outside with the yardstick, cottage cat Monique was absolutely no help! It got scared and ran under the buffet, then into one corner and then another where it crouched behind my husband's flashlight he keeps hidden behind a basket! All the while I was anxiously pondering how I was going to cope with this lizard in my home if I could not get it out! Suddenly I remembered the white rubber gloves on the patio from my recent painting project. I donned one quickly and grabbed the lizard and tossed him out the door! Well, that made for an interesting cottage afternoon! :)

Cottage Community Church Welcome

Dear Cottage Friends:

While at Alexandra's Happiness Weekend in Stonington, CT, we attended Calvary Episcopal Church. The old stone structure was so beautiful. In true cottage community friendly spirit, when we were leaving, a woman hurried down the sidewalk after us to ask if we were new and to welcome us! Hubby Steve and I always attend an Episcopal church when we vacation out of town and it seems we've so often been warmly greeted in the Christian spirit of friendliness and welcome. Stonington is such a cottage community with its quaint homes, sweet main street, and friendly people. If you haven't checked out the July issue of Cottage Living magazine, be sure to get it as they did a wonderful article on the Top 10 cottage communities/neighborhoods in the U.S. where lovely homes, friendly neighbors, pretty parks, and great little coffee shops abound. Ah...cottage life is the good life! :)

Don't you just love the yummy colors in Alexandra's cottage writing room?! I love how she painted the back of the lighted curio cabinet with a lovely blue paint to showcase her collectibles and displayed the colorful pink tulips in the turquoise vase! Also, she is a fan of French artist Roger Muhl and I absolutely loved his paintings like the one hanging above the loveseat where I am sitting in the photo here. Hubby Steve and Me at Alexandra Stoddard's Cottage

Continuing on with posting about our visit to designer Alexandra Stoddard's own cottage in Stonington, CT, here's a shot of hubby Steve and me in her wonderful chintz-strewn living room. I absolutely love that upholstery! A reader e-mailed me and asked me if I had any resources for chairs like this that swivel and have a matching ottoman. My best advice on this one is to take this photo to a custom upholstered furniture shop near you and have them make them to fit your room and body size. A reputable shop can do this easily. Be sure to get some references first. Alexandra Stoddard's Cottage Colors

Dear Cottage Friends,

As I mentioned in my previous post, Alexandra Stoddard's cottage is filled with lovely, happy colors. Here is a photo of her pantry/buttery where she cleverly painted the floorboards with white and blue stripes! The colors showcase her lovely collection of treasures from her travels. Since she and Peter have decided to move on to the next chapter of their life and are selling their cottage, while we were there visiting, she let us choose anything we wanted to purchase from her home! What a special treat to now have personal mementos from my favorite design and lifestyle author! I chose 2 colorful prints from her buttery and also a striped creamer, which was featured in a photo shoot in her book, Alexandra Stoddard's Book of Color. I plan on having the page from the book and the creamer framed together in a shadowbox so that I can enjoy the creamer and not have to worry about it getting broken. What can you put in a shadow box from your home today that will make you happy at home?!

Alexandra and her lovely husband Peter invited us to spend time enjoying their cottage home in Stonington, CT as I have posted previously. Her home is filled with bright and lovely colors in pinks, yellows, blues, and greens and she leaves their windows curtain-less with lights turned on in the windows to "share her home with others." What generous and loving hearts and spirits she and Peter have! Here they are pictured in their dining room with her hydrangea tablecloth and their books. Newport, RI Cliffwalk

Newport, Rhode Island Castles!

Downtown Newport, RI is lovely and quaint and worth the trip! We loved the little shops and found a wonderful piece of art--a lovely print of a typical Nantucket cottage at Sheldon Fine Art, at 59 America's Cup Avenue, http://www.SheldonFineArt.com. It's a beautiful gallery with both original local art and prints. It was definitely worth the stop. Newport is home to more "castles" than cottages! Bristol, Rhode Island Cottage

Dear Cottage Friends,

On our journey from Providence, RI to author Alexandra Stoddard's Happiness Weekend in Stonington, CT, we journeyed through the picturesque town of Bristol, RI. I absolutely loved all the beautifully pristine architecture! I took a quick snap of this lovely cottage to show my readers how powerfully gorgeous color can be on a house! The red door, and bright red shutters, along with the American flag make a wonderful statement of home! This house definitely has curb appeal and stood out amongst others on the street. What can you do to your home this spring to make it have better curb appeal? How about getting out that can of paint!? Also, I really enjoyed stopping at Robin Jenkins Antiques at 278 Hope Street in Bristol. Robin was headed out the door when we drove up, but she was gracious enough to let me in to look. She has a broad assortment of antiques and prices and some wonderful primitives. It's worth a stop, or call her at 401-254-8958. She's very pleasant.

Special Cottage Weekend

Dear Cottage Friends,

Hubby Steve and I had the good fortune recently of being with my favorite and well-known interior designer/author, Alexandra Stoddard, and her wonderful husband Peter Megargee Brown, at their beautiful cottage home in Stonington, CT for a "Happiness Weekend" along with 28 others. It was a truly inspirational and fun time of great conversation, food, and meeting new like-minded friends from all over the U.S. We spent two different times at their own cottage home, which was filled with colorful collections and paintings from their travels all over the world. Alexandra's books have greatly influenced me both as a person and as a decorating consultant/writer since I read her book, Living a Beautiful Life in 1994. Her talk during the weekend was based on her recent book, Choosing Happiness. She gave us many life-enhancing principles to live by which I will be writing about in future posts so stay tuned! Musings from My Cottage Mailbox

Dear Cottage Friends,

Seems I've been yearning for simpler times lately, what with all the emails to answer, and junk mail to process. How about you? Remember when we used to walk to the post box and be greeted by a beautiful handwritten letter from someone we loved? I was a prolific letter writer to everyone from summer camp chums to college friends and far-away family members. And often our missives included little treats to each other like a bag of tea or a coupon for a treat. But alas, times have changed and we must change with them. To make my current mail duties a little easier, I found this charming outdoor mailbox at http://www.HomeGoods.com and had hubby Steve hang it indoors to process our mail. Whoever gets the mail from our outdoor mailbox puts it in this box til we are ready to go through it and divide it into piles like shred, read, bills to pay, etc. And the black binder clip I attached says "TO MAIL" so when hubby goes out in the morning he knows to take whatever's there to the mailbox to be mailed. He also attached some cup hooks to the bottom of the pretty box so we can hang our keys on there. A little organization at home makes life go much smoother! Cottage Home Office Armoire

Dear Cottage Friends,
I've been posting about creative ways for creating a home office in your cottage when space is at a premium. One thing you might consider is an office armoire that closes up. The one shown above in our home office is my husband Steve's. Shhhh, don't tell, but I I tend to be the neat freak in the family and while he's very efficient, he isn't as bothered by papers not being in order as I am, so we compromised by getting him a computer/office armoire that can be closed up at the end of the day so I am not distracted by his papers being out. (And so our cottage cats don't make litterbox shreds out of his papers!) It's a good way to do it if you share a small office like we do at home--10 x11. With Southern CA real estate prices being out of sight, we have elected to keep our cozy cottage so we are always practicing creative storage and living solutions. Cottage Home Office Filing System

Dear Cottage Friends,

In my last post I talked about the challenges of creating a home office in small spaces. One thing every home office needs is an efficient filing system. Even with the computer, we still have LOTS of paper, maybe even more as now we try to coordinate paper files and computer files both! I have 26 file drawers in my 10 x11 home office! A few are shown above. The secret is good space planning and an efficient filing system. My files line the perimeter of my room, leaving space in the middle for...well, me and my hubby Steve! I set my file drawers up by topic of interest, with files inside each topic labeled A-Z. I create a computer-printed file index on hot pink paper showing the name of every single folder in the file and put it right in front in the drawer in a pink folder so I can find it easily and refer to it when filing. Files also take maintenance, so every couple of months or so I make sure all the drawers have enough space and rearrange and/or purge if they don't. Since I am a writer, I have a lot of resource material that needs filing. The filing cabinets I used in my home office in the photo above are inexpensive and sturdy, yet attractive. Cottage Home Office

Dear Cottage Friends,

Since cottages tend to be small, if you work from home, creating a home office can be a challenge. But it is not impossible! My husband Steve and I both have room to work in our 10 x 11 spare bedroom which we've set up as a home office in our cottage. The key is to use your space creatively and wisely. Think up! Shelving can be added to the walls all the way to the ceiling if needed for storing binders and other office supplies, resource books etc. And don't forget to make it "cottage cozy" with pretty colors and containers! Here I created an inexpensive desk for myself by covering a board in a cottage stripe fabric and setting it on top of two wicker filing stands. And I added my favorite art which we have collected on our travels. I also always have fresh flowers to bring me joy. Sunshine Cottage by the Sea

Dear Seaside Cottage Friends,

Don't know about you, but my little dream mantra for my life is "When I look into my heart, what I always see, is a precious little cottage on a bluff by the sea." Hubby Steve and I took a drive up the beautiful Coast Highway 101 in Southern California today from our cottage in Cardiff by-the-Sea to Laguna Beach, one of the most picturesque villages on the California coast and home to many artists and writers and other incredibly talented people. Your Colorful Cottage

In some parts of the country it's still too cold to be thinking about gardening, so how about "planting some color" in the inside of your house? My favorite way to choose colors is by looking at nature! Just look at the vibrant colors in all the plants above. If you have some photos of your garden, take them to the paint store and they can use their computer to find you the perfect color match for inside your cottage. Or, if you live in a warm climate and actually have the flowers, take them right into the paint store. Nature's bounty blesses us with divine color, so why not bring it inside and revive your cottage colors?!

Cottage Spring Spruce-Up

Dear Cottage Friends,

Well, I have the cottage garden bug already this spring! Since I live in sunny Southern California, spring comes early and I love that! Hubby Steve and I went to Armstrong Garden Center, http://www.armstronggarden.com, and decided on a colorful bunch of impatiens this year instead of the true cottage style flowers we had last year. (I just found out that Armstrong Garden now has a garden design and install service that is very affordable. My center also gives stellar customer service, which I love.) It was a bit more up-keep to have the real cottage type flowers last spring and summer, so we opted for simple and colorful this year. What will you do to spruce up your home outside this spring? Install an arbor with trailing ivy and roses? How about some topiaries placed by your front door? A metal watering can planted with colorful flowers is a nice touch on your front step or porch. How about a new floral wreath for your front door?

Cottage Cozy One Step at a Time

Dear Friends,

Sometimes we just have to take life at home one step at a time with faith! I had a decorating prospect contact me via e-mail a couple of weeks ago distraught because they were in the middle of remodeling their cottage when they received word that their son had been killed. A year and a half passed and they were still grieving and just starting to feel ready to figure out what to do about their home remodeling because their 9 year old granddaughter wanted all their son's possessions, some of which were still at their home. I reassured them that they would know when it was truly right for them to go forward with their home projects and that I could help them do so to create a future life of happiness at home while still honoring their son's memory in their home if they so wished. The key here, I believe, is to take whatever time you need to grieve, and do it on your own terms. But also know, that you can also move on to a new life of joy at home, too, and that by doing some spruce-ups in your home, or even sometimes moving to a new place, you can give yourself a new lease on life and help you move forward.

Life is filled with transitions that affect how we live at home. A friend recently went through an unexpected divorce and relocation of his family. Though grieving now, I know that in time, due to his resilience and faith, that he will again find joy at home, wherever that comes to be. It is important I think, during these transitions, to curl up with a warm blanket, a favaorite pet, a mug of hot chocolate, and perhaps a good book in the sanctuary of home and nurture yourself through the difficult time. But don't stay stuck there any longer than necessary, either, because life is meant to be lived and can be an exciting journey and you don't want to miss what lies ahead! We all have to remember to take life one step at a time, so why not do it (mentally) through a beautiful garden like in the photo above?! That's what I'm going to do!

Sharing our Homes

Dear Cottage Friends,

I received a thank you letter from my mom-in-law today thanking us for their time spent at our home in January. What she said specifically was "thank you again for the time we spent together--we will never forget it." We spent lots of time touring the beautiful Southern CA coast when they were here, but we also did a lot of just plain visiting at home. How will you share your home during February, the month of love? Sometimes just sitting in front of the fire and having a nice glass of wine together, or snuggling up in bed with a movie and a big bowl of popcorn makes home seem so wonderful. Hmmm...think I'll go pop some popcorn and find my hubby for a movie. How about you?

A Peach of a Color for Your Cottage

Dear Cottage Friends,

I recently read in one of my decorating sources that the HOT new color for home in 2006 is coral! Hmmm...guess everything old is new again as that's the color I had in our wedding in 1980!! I also painted our living room walls in that color (more specifically called Acapulco Sun) in 1995. Well, in any event...this "new" color trend is one of my favorites. If you are thinking of painting your cottage or home in 2006, why not give it a try? Versions of coral are shrimp, apricot, peach, or melon. I have never had so many compliments on a color in a home I've lived in as during my "Acapulco Sun" days and I always felt a little like I was on vacation! Have fun choosing a peach of a color for your cottage! And always remember, no matter what the latest color "trend," the most important thing is to choose a color you love!

Cottage Cat Monique's Organizing Tip

Dear Cottage Friends,

Since January is official "Get Organized" month, we all still have a few days to tackle one home organizing project. Staying organized requires maintenance, so I decided to re-organize my jewelry and after I purchased these ice cube trays, (yes, I said that right), my dear cottage cat Monique decided to "help." So what do ice cube trays have to do with organizing jewelry? A lot! They are an inexpensive way to store earrings, rings, and brooches. The trays stack nicely on top one another and I set them inside a plastic Rubbermaid container with a lid and put it on my clothes closet shelf. When I'm finished dressing, I pull out the container and sit on my bed to choose my jewelry for the day. Easy and inexpensive! Thanks Monique, for the organizing tip!

Cottage Charm at Home

Dear Cottage Friends,

What's your definition of charm at home? Do you consider your own cottage home to be "charming?" Would you like it to be? Recently I picked up a book in the bookstore, The French Touch, by Daphne de Saint Sauveur. I loved what Daphne had to say about charm at home: "Charm is that seductive quality, as irresistible as it is intangible, independent of time and passing fashions, that blooms in any home, small or large, in the city or in the depths of the country, that has been furnished with love...it depends on a whole host of varied details and it raises domesticity to the level of art." I think she says it well...charm is putting you in your home with love and an appreciation of all the artful details that evolve as you live out your days. Last year when my husband and I were puttering together in our cottage patio garden and enjoying it, he said to me, "Kathryn, you've taught me how to live." Isn't he charming? :)

What Gives You a Sense of Home?

Dear Cottage Friends,

What is it that gives you a sense of HOME? Is it a house you and your family have built together after many years of dreaming? Is it the people you entertain from your social group? Is it cozy nights spent by the fire with your mate? Or lovely things you've collected while traveling the globe? I have many things in my life that I associate with home, but I realize at this stage in my life that my concept of what makes a house a "home" has changed somewhat over the years. Since I have moved a lot, I consider "home" right where I am right now, today.

When I was a young woman in my early 20s, my then boyfriend, now husband of 25+ years, took me "home" to meet his parents and I learned a different concept of home because they had lived in their same home for nearly 50 years! My mother-in-law made what I later termed "the best fried chicken on the planet" and they were always so glad to see us. She loved nothing more than cooking up a large home cooked meal for her family and anyone else who might wander near their farm in the Midwest. My inlaws recently came to visit us at our own Southern California home and have enjoyed it immensely. Now it's been our turn to nurture them at our home. We decided to scrap the fried chicken and spend time dining by the ocean and touring the beautiful sites along the coast. We've spent time recollecting fun memories and I've been happy to share our current version of "home" with them.

Palm Springs Has Cottage Cats Too!

Dear Friends,

I bet hubby Steve and I had not been at our villa in Palm Springs more than an hour when I said, "I miss our cottage cats." Not more than 10 minutes later he called to me from our patio, "Kath! there's a family of 6 cats right outside!" I couldn' t believe it and I was immediately captivated by their antics. Sure enough, a proud mama and gorgeous papa were there with their 4 babies. And the nearby ducks in the pond were not amused! I immediately told Steve I wanted to go to the grocery store and get some Friskies and Christmas toys for them. "Well, we're supposed to help the less fortunate at Christmas," he said, "who said it has to be people--let's go!" And off we were. You know, surrounded by the opulence that Palm Springs is noted for, I realize that while it's fun and exciting, it's truly the simple things I love the most in life, like a pretty cozy cottage and cuddly kittens. Cottage Cat Beau is Ready for a Vacation...

Dear Friends,

My cottage cat Beau has made it clear to me that he's as tired of office paperwork as I am and he's more than ready for a fabulous vacation. While we're away from our cottage, he'll be well fed from his "purrple" food bowl that decorates his favorite space, so I don't worry about that. And he loves to drink from the faucet we leave on for him, so he'll always have something to drink. I just hope he doesn't make a mess of my kitchen by trying to use the "purrcolator" to make himself and Monique a "catachino" or something! Of course, he and Monique don't like it much when we travel so they will probably be in a bad "mewd" when we return, but I'm sure they'll warm up to us in no time once they see the great cat toys we've brought back from Palm Springs, CA for them! Cottage Cat Monique Says Happy End of 2005!

Oh Lordy, I forgot my cottage cats, Beau & Monique, will be minding the cottage when Steve and I head off for Palm Springs, CA for Christmas....that gives me a little "purranoia" about what they might be up to while we're gone...well since it's winter, (even in Southern CA), I doubt they'll be tinkering with our cottage "lawn meower"... but I do suppose they'll have all their cat "purraphernalia" all around the house when we get back...and of course Monique (photo above) has broken a few Christmas tree ornaments this year since she considers those ornaments "purradise" and the spot under the tree has been her favorite "purrch" since we put the tree up. Ah well, since Pamela, from Pamela's Pampered Pets is coming to pet sit, it shouldn't be a problem. I think I've mentioned that Pamela is like Mary Poppins for pets! She's that sweet and even Monique, finicky feline princess that she is, loves her. Monique signs off now for 2005 and wishes you a joyful holiday!

From Cottage to Castle...

My husband Steve and I are leaving our cottage for the holidays and heading from the Southern CA coast to the desert of Palm Springs, CA. One of my favorite places to have lunch is the beautiful Marriott hotel there (photo above)--rumored to be one of Marriott's premier properties in the world. They have an indoor "lake" (not a pond!) with boats and gorgeous pink flamingos as you walk up to the front entrance. Last year the entire lengthy driveway to the property was lit up with white Christmas lights which were absolutely incredible! However you choose to spend your holiday this year, whether in your cottage, or on a cruise, or in a castle, may it be joyous and filled with happy memories!

My little seaside village of Cardiff by-the-Sea, CA is all decked out for the holidays. I captured this photo tonight of this huge 40 foot evergreen tree just a stone's throw from Moonlight Beach in Encinitas (sister town to Cardiff). We have a lot of palm trees in Southern California, but this evergreen rises majestically above the Pacific Ocean to remind us of this wonderful season of happiness at home. How will you celebrate? Personalized Christmas Gifts...

Dear Friends,

Have you ever received a very personalized Christmas gift that you still cherish or that still holds a special place in your heart and home? One year when work was very stressful for my hubby Steve, I took a photo that I had taken of him on his favorite golf course in beautiful northern Arkansas and sent it to our favorite Nebraska artist, Van Mueller. I did this secretly in the summer so it would be ready by Christmas. Shown above (with Monique lounging nearby!), Van did a beautiful watercolor painting of the photo and we both had such great fun surprising Steve. He loved it. Is there something you could do like this for your spouse to bring you closer in thoughtfulness of each other at home? My husband always gives me the most beautiful cards for my birthday and our anniversary. He's not a writer like me, so he tells me he reads each one with care and chooses one someone else has written that expresses his love for me. This year, I framed a favorite card he gave me and by doing so, created an inexpensive piece of art for our bedroom. How about looking through your greeting cards you've saved from your mate and trying this for an economical Christmas gift if funds are tight? The Cottage Cats Go Christmas Shopping...

Dear Friends,

Looking for a good "cottage home book" to give as a gift for Christmas? Well, Beau (photo above) and I went shopping today at Borders Books and we got a bit delayed because I saw the book, Cottages on the Coast, Fair Harbors and Secret Shores by Linda Leigh Paul. Okay, so I bought myself a Christmas present--I couldn't resist! I love the ocean with a passion and when you combine the words cottages with ocean and secret...well I'm simply hooked. I took a little break from working hard these past few weeks and I savored this book which is filled with gorgeous photos of cottages on all three coasts of the U.S., "from the cliffs of Big Sur in CA to the dunes of Nantucket to Florida's sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico." The picturesque locations truly transport you to beautiful places. My favorites were "Treasure Cottage" in Key West (page 121) and "Rabbit Run" -- a large generational family cottage on Nantucket (page 42). Let me know which cottages in the book are your favorites. Christmas Cookie Memories...

Dear Friends,

Do you do your holiday baking at home, or have you, like me, succumbed in recent years to the store bought version? I love all those pretty frosted sugar cookies I'm seeing in the grocery stores, but you know, I remember a simpler and saner time when I was a 21 year old bride and a new friend and I had our first fun "cookie baking marathon and exchange." Martha and I were first year teachers in the isolated Sandhills country of Nebraska, (which was populated mostly by cattle on ranches!), and we were lonely and missed our friends back in "civilization" that year. So we decided to get together one night at her little cottage (mine was smaller yet) and have a marathon bake-a-thon. We pulled out our family recipes and baked into the wee hours, giggling and telling stories the whole time. What fun we had!! We then created some nice plates of goodies and took them to our students and their families, workplaces, church, and friends we had just recently met. It created a new tradition and we did it again the next year. I want to share Martha's Nut Butter Balls recipe with you. They're easy to make and delicious! Hmmm...I've lost track of Martha but think I'll see if I can find her and send her a Christmas card from my home to hers this year...

Martha's Nut Butter Balls

1 c. real butter

1/3 c. sugar

1/2 t. salt

2 t. vanilla

2 c. flour

1 c. chopped nuts

Cream butter & sugar. Add vanilla, salt, flour, and nuts. Mix well. Chill well. Shape into 1 " balls and bake on ungreased cookie sheets. While warm, roll in powdered sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 min. These melt in your mouth! (and aren't low cholesterol, but oh well, it's holiday time!)

The History of Christmas Cards...

Dear Christmas Cottage Friends,

Did you know that the first Christmas card was invented by Londoner John Calcott Horsley in 1843? The early Christmas card manufacturers believed Christmas cards to be a vogue which would soon pass. By 1880 their manufacture was big business. And did you also know that it's been 10 years since the first Internet Christmas e-card came into existence? Even though relatively few people were using the internet, and few had e-mail, some 14,500 Internet Christmas cards were sent in 1995 and 40,000 in 1996. As one of the originators of e-cards, John Zeeff says, "Technology changes but the thoughtfulness of people continues." My sentiments exactly since I highly value the virtue of thoughtfulness, in whatever form. E-commerce analysts predict that by the year 2007 almost 80 million e-cards will be sent annually. Christmas Cards From Your Home to Ours

Dear Friends,

Are your home mailboxes starting to spring forth those wonderful things called Christmas cards? My mailbox is and I love this time of year and connecting with old friends. How about you? Do you have people you have corresponded with for years only at Christmas time? My husband Steve and I have moved a lot, so it's a fun time for us to hear from people we have not seen in many years. I still hear from a man who was my supervisor at a library I worked at in 1978, from a couple Steve worked with when we were married in 1980, from friends in college whose children are now grown. I treasure the holiday letter I received from my 20 year old niece this year describing her new beau, who "really knows how to treat a lady." :) If you haven't sent any Christmas cards this year, can you think of someone in your past who might enjoy hearing from you as a surprise? Or how about someone who is elderly and alone? It's not too late...the holiday season doesn't end til January 2! Christmas Parties Galore!....

Dear Friends,

Are you in the holiday spirit yet?! After 3 Christmas parties this week, I am! First came my husband Steve's office party, then tonight we were invited to the home of some great friends from our church who adopted 2 beautiful Russian children 4 years ago. We donated toys for their trek to an orphanage in Mexico next Saturday. They are teaching their children, who were orphans in Russia, to give like they have been given to. We wanted to help their cause along, too. Their home was all decked out for the holidays--here I am by their pool as we watched a magnificent San Diego sunset! Then we came home and threw a dinner party for our good friends Lynn & Craig and did our annual gift exchange. I feel so privileged to have such loving friends in my life. How about you? Will you spend some time with your friends this holiday season? As the old saying goes, "We get by with a little help from our friends."

Cottage Christmas Collections

Dear Cottage Friends,

Do you have any collections you love to display at Christmas? Collections and cottages go hand in hand! Do you have favorite Nutcrackers given you by family and friends? Bells? Ornaments? One thing I enjoy doing each year with my husband Steve when we decorate our little cottage for Christmas is unpacking his Santa collection, which now numbers around 40. None of them are expensive but all of them hold precious memories. It began when I gave him one for fun many years ago and he made the comment, "Hmmm, I should start collecting these every year." I held that thought and bought him another and then family and friends started doing the same. He has his motorcycle Santa, his surfin' Santa, his Superman Santa, and one some friends brought back from Russia...and on it goes. I pick them up when we travel and one catches my eye. What Christmas collection might you start this year, that isn't expensive, but can bring happy memories to your home and family each year? As for me, I realized this year as I was unpacking our Christmas decor that I have 5 small nativities...hmmm, it only takes 3 of something to start a collection!

What are Your Christmas Traditions?

Dear Friends,

What are your fondest Christmas traditions involving your home and home life? Do you decorate in red and green only, adorning your tree with ornaments collected over the years? Do you bring out your best china, or your favorite Christmas dishes, for a lovingly created Christmas dinner for your family? Or do you prefer an all-white Christmas, both outside and inside, with a tree done all in glitzy white? Whatever traditions you choose, the one thing that is certain is that these traditions are important in the fabric of your life story. Traditions bond us together and are the stuff happy home life memories are made of when we look back on our lives. Over the years, I've both created and experienced different traditions and rituals as my life has evolved. One thing I love now that I have lived in California for 7 (glorious) years is the warm weather (photo above) and the "Christmas Palms" decorated with lights everywhere, as well as the "surfin' Santa" themes in the stores. It reminds me how happy I am to be able to live where it's warm and sunny year round, which was my dream for a long time. What special Christmas tradition can you create for your family this year? I know one family that bakes a cake for Jesus' birthday. I love that idea. Hmmm, I think I might start a new tradition this year!

The Cottage Cats Recommend These Books!

Holiday Greetings from my Cottage Cats!

Monique & Beau (busy being cats in the photo above) have been busy perusing the bookstores for all of you cottage cat lovers lately. And they have decided that what every cottage cat lover's home library should have for Christmas are some new cat books! Monique, my 11 year old fur girl, found an especially interesting title she loved,Your Cat's Just Not That Into You, by Richard Smith. "Aristocat" that she is, she found it quite amusing! Beau, my dashing black smoke gentleman, (the gals at the vet often call him this) recommends, Cat People: A Hilariously Entertaining Look at the World of Cat Lovers and Their Obsessive Devotion to Their Pets by Michael and Margaret Korda. I think the title says it all, and as you may have noticed by my blog...describes me! Have a purrrrfect time Christmas shopping for your family and friends who have the feline fetish!

Simplify Your Christmas!

Have you ever wished you could simplify your Christmas preparations, gift giving, and celebrations? I started to do this several years ago and have found it most enjoyable. I plan ahead over the year, review and update my Christmas card list in September, and begin thinking about our annual Christmas letter by the end of October. It's fun to review the year and see where it has taken us on our life journey. As a practicing Christian, I also try and focus on the true meaning of Christmas; the birth of the Lord Jesus. When I stay focused on that as the celebration, I find joy amidst the hustle and bustle of the season. "Deck-orate the Halls" With Boughs of...

Dear Friends,

What do you look forward to each Christmas? Just one of the things I enjoy is the anticipation of my husband's annual office Christmas party. The photo above was taken at this year's event and it makes me realize what an exciting journey Steve and I have traveled together during his 25 years as a real estate lender. It was also fun to see Steve pull out his Santa tie that lights up! Each party reminds me also how many people we have met who have enriched our lives, and how far we have come together as a couple since we started "deck-orating the halls" of our first Christmas together in 1980.

What activity can you attend this year that will make your heart smile? What tradition can you start together as a couple to enrich your marriage or your family life? Some of our Christmases have been difficult ones, but I look back and realize that we weathered them with grace, and that the traditions we created together helped anchor us during the storm. For example, we have chosen to attend, nearly every year, a Christmas concert or pageant in a church other than our own home church. Many of these concerts are free if you are on a tight budget. Have a light dinner out afterwards, or come home to some hot cocoa or cider. It's time to "Deck-orate Your Halls" With New Boughs of Christmas Traditions! Have fun!

Speaking of Couples Nesting Together...

Wouldn't you know, all I had to do is get a pedicure today to connect with two awesome people who told me these two heartmelting nesting stories...having to do with home (and homelessness) and well then actually a third... one told me the beautiful story of how she met her husband after turning around at a buffet table and accidentally dumping her whole plate of "red" food down the front of his business suit! Of course she wanted to crawl under the rug and offered to pay for his dry cleaning. But she said he was such a gracious gentleman that he refused and next thing she knew he was smiling at her from across the room and then came over to ask her to have coffee with him. She replied, "Well, my gosh sir, you are a brave man to risk being with me and food again!" and he laughed. Well the rest is history as they've been married three years now and are happily creating a home together...well then along came a nice guy who sat down to talk to us at the salon and I commented on the book he was reading which was Og Mandino's "The Greatest Miracle in the World." He told me how a homeless man had given it to him to read as it had changed his life forever for the better...okay so now I have a copy of the book on my nightstand....just goes to show how many beautiful people there are in the world if we just take time to be a little interested.

Calling All Couples for a Nesting Interview I...

Dear Friends,

Okay, so I know you're not a cat....but I'm looking to interview 10 long-term happily married couples (10 + years) for my new e-book, "Decorating Without Divorcing" (TM) and I thought the above photo of my Beau & Monique was a cute couple! (And Beau really is a beau to her--he treats her like a Queen!--I'm so proud of him!) Anyway... I have a thick file of notes of observations I've made and conversations I've overheard (writers are always eavesdropping for good info--sorry!) at dinner parties and in furniture stores and in restaurants for the past 20+ years on the topic of couples creating a home together (nesting) and choosing how to furnish and make it a REAL home, not just a house...and now my friends, I'd like to interview some of you real live couples who are willing to share with me some of your stories and the strategies and tips that have worked for you well. Of course all names will be changed to protect the guilty! :) (Seriously, you don't even have to give your real names unless you want to, but I'll be giving them pseudonyms anyway.)

Just a few topics of interest are:

*Dealing with remodeling messes and length of construction, handling difficult contractors, how you choose furnishings together, are your children involved in the process, who/how you organize the projects, topics of contention and how you handled them successfully (or how you didn't :), pets in the home, and more FUN STUFF!! News from the Cottage "Cattage" Cats...

Couldn't resist this shot of my fur kids today as they pose as a happy couple in our cottage window, or as my new friend Jeff http://thearticleguy.com calls it, their "cattage!" Oh and are Steve and I "cat owned" or what?!! Today we had Pamela Shank, of Pamela's Pampered Pets* come by our cottage to go over instructions for their care and keeping while we will be traveling soon. Monique, our 11 year old silver mackeral tabby Scottish Fold, displayed her best "cattitude" by looking at Pamela with total cat disdain while she was lazing in her cozy pink faux fur cat bed--(she being Monique doing the lounging in the fur bed, not Pamela!) Pamela couldn't stop laughing! The pink fur bed was also a hit with our dear friends Lynn & Craig, http://AdvAchAcademy.org, when they were here recently to see what updates we've been doing on our cottage nest lately.

*(Pam doesn't have a web site yet, but when she does...I'll let you know as she's really professional and so sweet she's like Mary Poppins for cats! :))

Decorating Without Divorcing (TM)

Dear Friends,

Are you and your mate having trouble agreeing on how to create a home that is comfortable and pleasant for both of you, or if you have children, for the whole family? Never fear, it can be done! I have observed couples in furniture stores and around dinner table parties for the past 20 some years, and listened to their issues regarding nesting together. The topic has always intrigued me, and has also prompted me to start writing my new ebook, "Decorating Without Divorcing" (TM) --because I love giving couples tips on how to make their home liveable for both of them. It doesn't have to become a battleground. With some good communication, creative planning, and loving compromise, you can create a wonderful nest together and have fun in the process. A favorite author and personal acquaintance of mine has written a great book on the subject, "Living Beautifully Together," by Alexandra Stoddard. Happy Travels to Southern California

Dear Friends,

Someone recently mentioned to me that the town I live in, Cardiff by-the-Sea, CA, sounds like an English name. It was named after the town of Cardiff, Wales. If you want to visit San Diego County and enjoy one of the last quaint beach towns in Southern CA, this is the place to visit!! Moving here from the Midwest 7 years ago, my husband Steve and I feel blessed to be living in this postcard-perfect Southern California seaside village of about 13,000 people. We enjoy year round weather of about 68 degrees and 300 days of sunshine a year, and best of all, virtually no humidity! Cardiff, as the locals call it, sits picturesquely in the hills up above the famous CA Highway 101, also known by the locals as "the 1" or "the 101," which runs up the entire CA coast. We can see the ocean at the end of our street and I'm still in awe of its beauty! Quaint cottages abound here so please come visit! The Cardiff Lodge Bed & Breakfast http://cardifflodge.com is a great place to stay and has a beautiful 3rd floor viewing deck for taking in the breathtaking view of the oh so blue Pacific! It has wonderful rooms done in cottage style decorating that are lovely.

Thanksgiving Gratitude

Dear Friends,

I hope your Thanksgiving Celebration with your famiy and friends was joyous. My husband Steve and I spent a magical day at the wonderful Inn at Rancho Santa Fe in North County San Diego. If you like to travel, check out http://theinnatrsf.com. The motto is "Where a bygone era of gracious rural living has never gone by." It's what I love about going there. The people are not in such a rush and have good manners and graciously serve their guests. A lovely tiny orchestra played for us while we feasted on their sumptuous buffet. The photo above shows the old fashioned apple press that gave us fresh apple juice. It was well worth saving up for to make this a special day together. It makes my heart sad though that there are so many people who are struggling in poverty in this country and I wanted to do something about it in my own small way. On the Friday after Thanksgiving our church serves its annual dinner to the homeless so my husband and I donated food for the day. I was happy to share of my own abundance and I pray that those who were served that day might soon find a home that nurtures them.
